Biography
I was born on May 16th, 1980 into the home of Mike and Bea Edwards. I'm glad that I can say that I was born into a Christian home. I am a third generation preacher by God's grace. Growing up in a pastors home we of course were alwaysat church no matter what was going on. As you know going tochurch doesn't make you a Christian and so when I was in thefirst grade God convicted me of being a sinner. Late one night I couldn't sleep and went in and told my mother that I wasn't saved. She explained God's plan of salvation to me and that night we bowed in our living room, and I accepted Christ as my personal Savior. My life has never been the same since.
Growing up in a pastors home, we were always around musicand things of this nature. My family began to sing together,we had 4 boys, 2 girls, and then there was mom and dad so wehad quite the ensemble. We enjoyed singing together very much and that is when I learned to sing harmony. Mom would sing the lead, until my older sister Gwen began to blossom into an incredible singer, and dad would sing the harmony. As we grew older we each just picked a part and sang along. I have very fond memories of that time in my life. Sometimes even today we get to sing together in church and different places. I thank God for my family.
My parents were missionaries in Oregon for 7 years and they started a church while they were there. One of the things that missionaries have to deal with while on the field is that they get to listen to the SAME music for 4-7 years
depending on how often they return home. Well, that being the case we listened to all of Squire Parson's music until we could sing those songs in our sleep. Thinking back on it now I can't believe those cassettes lasted so long. We also had a couple of tapes of the Rochester Family and a few others. I can still remember hearing my first Gold City CD. I thought they were a new group that had just come out in the mid 90's. Ha Ha ha.
When my family came back to Georgia from Oregon I was about 14, and when I was 15 God began to burden my heart to be a missionary to Australia. I answered his call and began to prepare for the ministry. During this time is when I wrote my first song. I graduated from Bible college in 2001 and then began to raise support to be able to go to Australia. During this time I recorded my first CD with a lot of encouragement from one of the ladies in my church. From there things began to move along rather quickly with my music. It wasn't long before I was writing and recording quite a bit.
My wife Lindsay and I were able to finally go to Australia
in June of 2007 with our daughter Whitney, who was 4 months old at the time. We started the Calvary Independent Baptist Church during our first term, and God has abundantly blessed the work. We are very excited to see what God is going to do there in Beaudesert, Qld, Australia.
As a song writer I've been very blessed to have several
songs recorded by a couple of different artists besides
myself. Jeremy Guider has recorded "Trial by Fire", "I Came Home", and is planing to record 3 new songs on his next record. Jeff Tolbert of the Primitive Quartet, has recently released his new record, on which he recorded as his title track a song that God blessed me with called "Mercy and Grace". I am very excited to see what God will do with these men. My prayer is that through my music others will be drawn to Christ.
Some of the influences I have enjoyed as a
singer/songwriter are Squire Parsons, Gold City, The
Kingsmen, The Marksmen, The Steels, The Inspirations, and Randy Travis. I think the one individual that has influenced me the most in music besides my parents is singer/songwriter Lance Carpenter. He recently co-wrote the #1 gospel hit "I have not Forgotten" released by The Inspirations. I am proud to say that he is a good friend, and most of what I know about guitar playing came as a result of him showing me a few chords. Ever since the first song I wrote, he has very kindly given me advice about music theory and songwriting. Without God's grace and the patient help of Lance Carpenter I wouldn't be where I am today.
I want to thank everyone for all of your prayers and
support, and would like to ask that you continue to pray our family as we go back to Australia as soon as we get our new visas to continue in the work God has called us to. Please pray for my wife Lindsay, our daughter Whitney, and our new son Johnathan Stephen Edwards Jr. or commonly known of as J.J. I know they would appreciate your prayers as well. May God richly bless you all as you serve him.
In Christ
John Edwards
