Not to be confused with JB and Barbara Spencer, and The Spencers of southern gospel,
For almost 50 years now, Kentucky natives Mary and Mitchell Spencer have spent their lives dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through pure, acoustic, bluegrass gospel music. Through the years they have recorded many albums on various labels. It began with LPs (records) , then to the 8-tracks, cassettes, and now compact disc. The Spencer Family have done it all.
Along with the Lewis Family, and the Sullivan Family, the Spencer Family pioneered the way as one of the first all bluegrass gospel groups on the road. They were the very first group in the music industry to travel to the state of Texas and do a full-color video. Over the years they have received numerous honorable invitations to share their music at festivals, theaters, arenas, and even the grand ole opry. Although the Spencer Family have always found their home in churches.
When they began their ministry almost 50 years ago group members were Mitchell on Banjo and Baritone Vocals, Mary singing the tenor & alto, Marys brother Gene Ingram on Guitar and lead Vocals, and Cliff Strange playing upright bass. Over the years the group has evolved into a much more contemporary bluegrass sound.
Present members traveling are Mitchell Spencer now on lead guitar and singing lead and Baritone, Mary still singing tenor & alto, their daughter Carol sings soprano, her husband Jonathan Goodwin plays banjo, drives the bus, and emcees for the group. Jonathans brother William Goodwin plays mandolin, and the Spencers grand-son Michael Otis plays Upright Bass.
Although Mary and Mitchell are now in their mid-eighties, they still on occasion climb onto the bus and head down the road for a weekend of entertaining and ministering around the country and especially in the hills of home, Kentucky. Be watching for a brand new anniversary project to be released on the C&C Music Group label February 2010.
